From the World Health Organisation comes this definition -
Mental Health refers to a broad array of activities directly or indirectly related to the mental well-being component and includes - "A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease". It is related to the promotion of well-being, the prevention of mental disorders, and the treatment and rehabilitation of people affected by mental disorders.
They go on to say -
“Mental health is not just the absence of mental disorder. It is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.”
The C&CDHB Mental Health Directorate works with tangata whaiora/consumers, their families and communities to achieve these goals.
Capital & Coast DHB Directorate is divided into two sub-directorates with distinct areas of responsibility for mental health and addiction provision. The first, the Local Mental Health and Addiction Service is for the people of the Wellington and Kapiti Districts and the second, Te Korowai-Whäriki, is to provide Central Regional and National services to people requiring mental health and addiction assessment and treatment.
This website offers information and contact details for the Local Mental Health and Addiction Services. Information about National and Regional Services can be found by following the link to the Te Korowai-Whäriki website.
Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand. The Local MH&AS provides specialist mental health and addictions services to a population of 280,000 people in the Wellington, Porirua and Kapiti regions and employ over 600 staff. The region is diverse in many ways, especially its people, who come from many ethnic and cultural groups and, as the Capital, is home to both short term residents and those who have lived in the area for generations.
