Family Advisors

Family Advisors promote the Participation in Partnership model, that aims to reduce the burden for people who are supporting someone who is experiencing mental illness.

The main functions of the Family Advisor centre around enhancing the involvement of families and whanau in all areas of the Local Mental Health & Addiction Service; planning, implementation and evaluation of the services provided.

The role also maintains and supports other key agencies' role in mental health and addiction, paritcular Atareira, in supporting the families of tangata whaiora/consumers. The Family Advisor collects and collates information and research and develops this into resource kits to assist families, whanau and others.

The current Family Advisor work programme includes:

  • Producing a CCDHB Mental Health, Addictions and Intellectual Disability Directorate (MHAID) Family and Whanau Information Package
  • Embedding Participation in Partnership to staff through training in the core competencies programme and MHAID orientation
  • Development of a protocol for supporting families involved in serious adverse events
  • Amending policy and developing protocol, and training packages

Atareira - mental health support organisation

Atareira is an independent organisation based in Wellington that offers support, education and advocacy for families of people with any major mental illness. Ph 499 1049.
